Struggling With Memorizing Scripture? Many Christians Do!

Scripture:
  • Deuteronomy 11:18  Lay up these words of mine in your heart and soul. Bind them as a sign on your hands and as frontlets between your eyes.
Have you seen some of those amazing videos of kids taking part in the National Bible Bee Game Show and wondered -Why can't I remember scriptures that easily?
Many Christians struggle with memorizing scripture. They sincerely want to memorize scripture, and they may have tried and tried and tried to memorize scripture in the ways proposed by other Bible scholars.
Why are these methods not working for you?
Simply put - other people are not you!
This post has an excellent video teaching by Bible teacher Susan Heck explaining the benefits of memorizing scripture and the method that has helped her memorize the whole New Testament. Twelve Ways People Might Learn Scripture by Heart

Did you know there are probably as many ways of learning as there are people? When I was taking my Bachelor of Education at Trent University, we learned there are four main ways of learning.
  • Aural - through hearing
  • Oral - through speaking
  • Kinesthetic - through doing and sensory experiences
  • Visual - through seeing

Most people use all four main learning styles in their path of learning something new, but which learning style is the best starting point for you?
Knowing which way you learn best can really help people struggling with learning something new.

How to Quickly Know Your Learning Style

One quick way to know your main learning style is to answer the following question:
Imagine you just received the latest new gadget. What is the first thing you do?

Do you:
  • Read the instruction manual or watch a video with the sound off? - Visual
  • Open it up and start trying it out? - Kinesthetic
  • Call up a friend and start explaining all about the new gadget?- Oral
  • Search for a video about the gadget and play it in the background? - Aural

Left- Brain Right-Brain Whole Brain - Which Side Do You Use Most?

The four main learning styles are further divided by the way you use your brain most frequently. Scientists say that while we use both sides of our brain throughout the day, some people use one side of the brain more frequently than the other. People who use the right side of their brain most frequently tend to learn better through being able to create something, whereas people who use the left side of their brain most frequently learn best through applying logic and creating logical connections. People who use both sides of the brain are known as whole brain learners or haptics.

The 12 main different learning styles are, therefore:
  1. Oral - Left Brain
  2. Oral - Right Brain
  3. Oral - Whole Brain
  4. Visual - Left Brain
  5. Visual - Right Brain
  6. Visual  - Whole Brain
  7. Kinesthetic  - Left Brain
  8. Kinesthetic  - Right Brain
  9. Kinesthetic  - Whole Brain
  10. Aural  - Left Brain
  11. Aural  - Right Brain
  12. Aural  - Whole Brain
Note: No learning style is superior to another as long. as you are allowed to tap into your personal learning style.

Applying Your Learning Style to Learning Scripture

Memorizing Scripture Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

If you are a hands-on or kinesthetic learner, you might find it easier to remember scriptures by writing them out. This method is actually prescribed in the Bible.
Write them on the door posts of your homes and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:9

If you are a right-brain kinesthetic learner, you might benefit by creating a piece of art, or dance that includes the book, chapter and verse.

Other things kinesthetic learners might due include:

  • Use modelling clay to make a sculpture.
  • Instead of counting while you do jumping jacks recite a scripture!
  • Write the words in the air with your toes while you repose. - Great exercise by the way.
  • Write scripture on a partner's back with your finger and see if they can guess the scripture.
  • Tramp the scripture out in the snow for people in planes to see when they look below.
  • Integrate scripture into daily activities. This logical connection technique could be useful to left-brain kinesthetic learners. For example, you could have a mat inside your door with Exodus 3:5 written on it and a sign at eye level stating: Then He said, "Do not come near here. Remove your sandals from your feet for the place on which you are standing is Holy Ground."
  • Left-brain kinesthetic  learners might also benefit from using a Scripture Memory Clock as a reminder to stop at certain times of the day and meditate and pray about a scripture

Memorizing Scripture Tips for Aural Learners

Do you learn best by listening? Aural learners can benefit from listening to recordings of the scriptures being read aloud. Here are a few techniques and tools that might be useful to you:
  • Take time to record scriptures and set a time for your phone to play them back to you. For example, at 4:31 listen to Ephesians 4:31
  • Listen to Scriptures being read aloud before you go to sleep or even as you sleep instead of counting sheep.

Memorizing Scripture Tips for Oral Learners

Do you learn best by talking? Many oral learners may find these tips useful.
  • Read scriptures aloud dramatically, using inflection and vocal variety.
  • See if you can work the scripture into conversations with others several times a day. For example, I was reading Luke 14:8 and it reminded me of when we were talking about the wedding seating plan.
  • Are you a creative right-brain oral learner? Make up a song and sing it out!

Memorizing Scripture Tips for Visual Learners

Do you learn best when you use your eyes? Visual learners might find some of the tips useful for memorizing scriptures.
  • Have scriptures all around your home. You can write scriptures on sticky notes, or have pillows, mugs, and wall decor with scriptures on them.
Scripture pillow "AS for me and my house we will serve the Lord -Joshua 24:15
Scripture Throw Pillow Joshua 24:15 As for me and my house, we shall serve the LORD

  • Wear the scriptures! In scripture, we are told to wear the scriptures on our hands and foreheads, but you can wear them everywhere! See this post about Faith Gear
  • Try using the look, say, write method many people learn for memorizing spelling words. Look at the scripture, say the scripture, write the scripture.
  • Visualizing the words of the scripture made into a sculpture may be useful for right-brain creative people.
  • Karaoke-style scripture videos where the words are lit up one at a time might be useful for you.
  • A Bible Memory Word search like this might be useful for visual learners too.
  • Make scripture memes to share on social media. This is something that might be useful for right-brained visual learners. For example, using the YouVersion Bible App select a scripture, choose an image and share it to Instagram, AND type the scripture out in the description, as well as in the accessibility option.
