Psalm 105:1 Deep Dive: A Meaning Lost in Translation

Psalm 105:1 Deep Dive: A Meaning Lost in Translation

While reading the daily scripture on the YouVersion Bible App, something seemed a bit off about the translation—it just didn’t quite make sense to me. I checked the various versions available on the app, but not being quite satisfied with what I found, I decided to get to the root of it—the Hebrew roots, that is. I wanted to know: what does it say in the Hebrew?

"Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples."Psalm 105:1 (NASB)

What I Discovered: The Meaning Lost in Translation

I stopped and thought, "That just doesn't make sense. Why would we be calling for help in the middle of praise and gratitude?" Generally, we think of "calling upon His name" as an SOS in times of trouble. But when I dug deeper into the original language, I found a beautiful layer of meaning that is often lost in translation.

Here is the three-fold call to action as it appears in the Hebrew:

  • Give Thanks (Hodhu): This isn't just a quiet "thank you." The Hebrew root suggests an active, public acknowledgement. It’s about "throwing" out our hands in worship to honour the Creator for His goodness.
  • Proclaim His Name (Qir’u): While many English Bibles translate this as "call upon His name," the Hebrew root qara actually carries the weight of proclamation. It is a summons to loudly declare who the Creator is and to invite others to witness His greatness. It’s not an SOS; it’s a shout of praise!
  • Make Known His Deeds (Hodiy’u): Our faith isn't meant to be a secret. When we recognise the Creator moving in our lives, we are called to share those "divine moments" globally.

The Importance of Digging Deeper

This shift from "calling for help" to "boldly proclaiming" shows why it is so important to double-check the scriptures. It transforms how we understand the Creator's Word and ensures we don't miss the full depth of His message.

If you ever feel like a translation is "off," I highly encourage you to use resources like Blue Letter Bible to look up the original Hebrew or Greek. It’s an incredible way to see the scriptures come alive in a whole new way.

Has the Creator shown up for you in a way that changed how you view a verse? I’d love to hear about your "aha!" moments in the comments below!

Looking forward to hearing from you!
