Year ago, my oldest daughter started gifting items that would outlast anything else- wonderful gifts of time and experiences. She took her younger sister to Canada's Wonderland several times and arranged for me to get a pedicure too. It is so true, the best presents are when people have the presence of mind to give a present of their time.

Jessica Martel created a list of many great ideas for frugal gifting of items that are especially great for people on the move, living in small spaces, or downsizing. Here are a few ideas from her list. Do you have some more that people might like to explore?

How to Gift the Minimalist Way

  •  Choose experiences over things When it comes to spending money, researchers have found that experiences result in greater long-term fulfillment than material purchases This is why an experience is the perfect gift for a minimalist. Not only does it not take up any physical space, it also doesn't have to be wrapped, which means no waste.
  • Gifting digital services like  Netflix is another great way to give something special to the minimalists in your life without adding physical clutter to their space.
  • Give the gift of learning - Find the perfect class for the perpetual student in your life. It's never been easier to give the gift of education with course sites like Udemy, Coursera, edXOpens
  • Get appy! No matter what the minimalist in your life is into, there's likely an app for that! You can even send them an app store gift by email.
  • Get creative! Share your favourite memories in a beautiful digital photo album. Or, put together a thoughtful digital cookbook with all of your secret family recipes.
  • Provide a service Whether you decide to get your hands dirty or pay someone else to do it, providing a service can be a great gift option. Here are a few ideas Jessica Martel shared: Clean and organize give a car wash or dog wash.
  • Pamper your friend, If you want to splurge, there’s nothing like the gift of a relaxing spa weekend. After all, who doesn’t love a massage, manicure or professional haircut?
