We love to quote Psalms 46:1 when life gets slightly uncomfortable: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." We print it on coffee mugs, stitch it onto throw pillows, and type it into encouraging text messages.
But what does that scripture actually look like when the "trouble is" at your doorstep, fueled by rage, and intent on taking your life?

I recently came across an incredible testimony out of England that completely reframes what it means to trust ADONAI as a refuge. It is a story of a young father, a violent street thug, a newborn baby, and a simple cup of tea. It is a story that proves when we choose to be peacemakers, He handles the power.
The Trigger: A Changed Life
The woman's brother was furious. Enraged that his sister had "turned religious" and abandoned her old crew, he tracked down the believer’s home.
The Open Door
There was a heavy knock at the door. The young believer opened it to find the brother standing on his step, visibly intoxicated and tightly gripping a strong can of ale.
Rather than shutting the door or getting defensive, the young man chose radical hospitality right from the start. Seeing the man's state, he warmly invited him inside and led him back into the kitchen.
The moment they stepped into the room, the atmosphere shifted to pure danger. The brother looked at him and unleashed his fury. In old English slang, the man declared himself a "masher"—a brutal street fighter—and announced he was there to "mash" the believer to a pulp.
Instantly, a wave of human dread washed over the young man. This wasn't a theological debate on a street corner; this was a violent threat inside his own sanctuary. In the very next room, his wife and their newborn baby were resting.
The young believer actually had martial arts training from his youth. Every physical instinct told him to square up, use his hands, and fight to protect his family. He had made a decision about who he wanted to be: he was a peacemaker, not a fighter. He knew a physical brawl in his kitchen would only bring violence closer to his wife and baby.
So, he stood his ground as a peacemaker. He looked at the man threatening to kill him and calmly said:
“I’ll put the kettle on.”
The Crash Behind the Back
He turned his back on the killer and walked toward the stove to make a hot drink. It was an act of absolute, vulnerable surrender. He was treating an enemy like an honoured guest, handing the defence of his home entirely over to God.
He didn't even see the miracle happen. As he stood with his back turned to the threat, he suddenly heard a loud, violent crash.
When he turned around, the "masher" was leveled. He was flat on the kitchen floor, one leg splayed out, his entire body shaking and trembling uncontrollably under an invisible weight.
Hearing the commotion, the wife ran into the room. Instead of calling the police or kicking the helpless attacker onto the street, this young couple chose the path of grace. Together, they helped the trembling man crawl into their living room. They sat him down and served him hot tea with lots of sugar to help his body recover from the shock.

When the attacker was finally able to find his voice, he demanded to know what had just happened.
He confessed that the moment the believer turned his back to reach for the kettle, he had lunged forward to deliver a lethal strike to the back of the believer's neck. But before his fist could connect, he said a great energy blasted out from the back of the believer's neck, hitting him like a physical wall and slamming him violently to the floor.
The young believer didn't have a rehearsed, theological answer ready. Because of the traditional church background he grew up in, he didn't know the standard religious buzzwords for spiritual shields or angelic interventions. He was entirely caught by surprise. But looking back, he now knows it was the raw, protective power of the Spirit updating his theology in real-time.
Right there in that living room, over a cup of sugary tea, the ultimate breakthrough happened. The "masher" accepted the Lord into his heart.
Putting the Kettle On
This testimony is a stunning mirror of Psalms 46. The passage tells us that because God is our refuge, "therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way."
Giving up fear doesn't mean we won't feel human dread. The young father felt it deeply. Giving up fear means we choose to open our doors with grace, and we choose not to rely on our own fists, our own strategies, or our own malice to solve the problem.
When we refuse to fight dirty, we give the Holy Spirit permission to fight for us. The next time you find yourself cornered by anxiety, conflict, or an adversary, remember the young father in England. Don't unleash your old instincts. Step back, invite peace into the room, and put the kettle on. Let God handle the crash.
