From the Ashes: The Miraculous Survival of Mickey Robinson

What happens when your life literally goes up in flames? For 19-year-old professional skydiver Mickey Robinson, a routine jump in 1968 turned into a nightmare that should have ended his life. Thomas Shipley: A Voice in the Storm and the Beauty of Creator's Timing

There is a specific kind of silence that happens when the grid fails in a small town. No fridge hum, no furnace rattle—just the wind howling across the Saskatchewan prairie. But the oddest part of the night wasn't the blackout; it was my phone suddenly giving up the ghost at 8% charge. It wouldn't recharge or even flicker, despite being plugged into a backup battery. A prairie storm reminds us of the light Thomas Shipley brought to human history and the beauty of the Creator's timing.

I picked up my trusty crank radio and started turning the handle, generating a small beam of light and a crackle of static in the shadows. I tuned in just in time to catch the tail end of an interesting tale on Our American Stories. It was a story about a man named Thomas Shipley.

Who was Thomas Shipley?

I’d never heard the name before, but the timing felt like a clear tap on the shoulder from the Creator. Thomas Shipley was a Christian abolitionist in the 1800s. He wasn't just a man of words; he was a man of radical action.

As a Quaker, Shipley believed with every fibre of his being that every person was created equal, carrying the "Inner Light" of God. While the world around him was filled with the darkness of slavery and kidnapping, Shipley stood his ground. He used his own body as a shield during riots and spent his life in courtrooms fighting for the freedom of those the world tried to ignore.

Light in the Darkness

There I was, in the middle of a literal prairie storm, cranking for a tiny bit of light, hearing about a man who was a beacon of light in a much grimmer storm of human history.

It’s a reminder that the Creator’s timing is always perfect. When my "modern" power cut out at that odd 8%, the Ruach HaKodesh led me to a story about a different kind of power—the power of a person who knows their worth and the worth of their neighbour. Shipley didn't need a power grid; he had a soul-deep connection to the truth.

Sometimes we need the lights to go out so we can finally hear what we’re supposed to. If you’re sitting in the dark tonight, whether it’s a power outage or just a hard season of life, keep cranking. The light is coming, and the message you need to hear is already on the airwaves. We just have to tune in.

Sometimes, a simple survey can lead to a spiritual spark. After answering a few questions about restaurants, I found myself craving the savoury crunch of KFC nuggets - something I haven't eaten in several years. Later that evening, I followed the urging of the spirit within me to start boiling some water in a little shallow cast iron pan in my toaster oven and take the channa flour out of my cupboard. 5 Biblical Proofs We Need to Watch What We Say!

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to go to a healing service where Joan Hunter was the honoured guest. I was healed of permanent nerve damage to my face at that service. This Shabbat I have been binge-watching Joan Hunter's Healing School videos after discovering them on YouTube last night. In her videos, Joan shares examples of absolutely incredible healings that have happened when people have spoken positive solutions to problems "in the name of Jesus".  Throughout the healing video series, Joan emphasizes continually, "Watch Your Words!" After marvelling at some of the amazing  miracles of provision that happened,  I was led to turn off the YouTube I was watching and open the YouVersion Bible App at Isaiah 44:26 and look carefully at the first part of this verse:

Reading Isaiah Helped Me - Perhaps It Will Help You Too!

The other day, I was hit with a wave of exhaustion just before sunset. I crawled into my sleeping bag, plugged my phone in and was about to settle in for a nap to sleep this horrible feeling off when the phone rang. 

A neighbouring sister in the Lord was on the phone line asking if she might come to visit me. I admitted that I just wasn't up to having company and that I had just crawled into my sleeping bag. We chatted a bit about the posts I had been writing then I said I still needed to finish my Shabbat readings. 

I said that I felt I really needed to read the Isaiah selection - right then! I was a bit curious about this overwhelming need to read from Isaiah RIGHT THEN, so I opened up the Blue Letter Bible website on my phone and started to read from the Shabbar selection. 

First I was delighted to discover this selection included many of my favourite scriptures, but one scripture really caught my attention.

Scripture:

• 40:29 נֹתֵן לַיָּעֵף כֹּחַ וּלְאֵין אוֹנִים עָצְמָה יַרְבֶּֽה׃

As I read this scripture, I exclaimed. "I am claiming this scripture for me!" I read it again aloud! 

Just then, the smell of crack cocaine from my upstairs neighbours started flooding my studio. I needed to get the door open - fast! Renewed energy came into my body. I got up to fling the door wide open and dispel the fumes. 

The sister on the phone exclaimed, "I am so happy to hear the change in you! When you answered the phone you sounded so weak, but now it's so different! You sound like you have so much energy!"

I am grateful Our Father led that sister to call me on the phone and put it in my heart to read that restorative scripture- who knows what might have happened if I had fallen asleep in that weakened state.

Have you ever cried out to Creator asking why you can never seem to get the love or approval of this person or that person? I remember very clearly the day I thought -"Finally, my mother will approve of me!" It was my first year of teaching. I was one of the few graduates who had received a post in the Scarborough Board of Education in Ontario, Canada. Excitedly, I introduced my mother to my class of students and...

she began tearing me apart verbally in front of my class!  Later, I told my sister that I finally realized that if I somehow became ruler of the world, my mother would have something to point out that she felt I was doing wrong and would probably shout it from the housetops!

When Pastor Vlad Savchuk of Hungry Generation Ministries shared how he had difficulties getting his dad's approval, it really struck a chord with me. Finally, he  cried out to G-d asking for help creating a loving relationship with his dad . He received an amazing answer when he was reminded of the words of a waitress in a Sushi restaurant!

How I Know Our Heavenly Father Heals

Our Creator is amazing. He has kindly blessed me with the opportunity to be healed in amazing ways through prayer.

It can be frustrating when people receive prayer and are not healed before their eyes. G-d has allowed me to experience having to wait for my repeated prayer requests to be answered too. 

The important thing to know is that Our Creator loves us all very much. And He answers EVERY prayer. His answers are:

- Yes

- Not yet, and...

- I have a better plan.

All prayers for healing are answered- they just have different answers.

Sometimes Creator's plans for our life include going through some VERY tough stuff. There may be people along the way that He wants us to meet, for example.

Christ said, "You will have trials and tribulations in this world, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome this world."

True, there is "one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy", but Our Creator is awesome. He can take our infirmities and create something amazing and new. For example, the Joni and Friends Ministry started by Joni Eareckson-Tada has brought hope to thousands of wheelchair users around the world. 

Just keep praying! G-d's timing is PERFECT and He will decide when and if it is time for a person to be healed. We must be persistent like the widow in the parable about the unjust judge.
