Bible Books Arranged By Number of Chapters - Bible Study Tool

Ever Wonder How Many Chapters Each Book of the Bible Has?

Scripture:
  • Luke 14:28 For which of you desiring to build a watchtower, does not sit down first and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
While Luke 14:28 is about counting the cost of discipleship before deciding to follow Jesus, I feel it really applies here too.

Many people want to know how many chapters are in each book of the Bible. Are you thinking about writing a sermon series, conducting a Bible Study or memorizing scripture? Or are you just curious to see how many chapters are in each book of the Bible? There are many reasons you might be looking for a list of the books of the Bible that have a certain number of chapters.

Perhaps you want to know which book of the Bible has the most chapters - that would be Psalms. Psalms have a whopping 150 chapters! Perhaps you want to know which books of the Bible have the least number of chapters.  Philomen, Obadiah, Jude, 2 John, and 3 John each have only one chapter - which could make them great topics for sermons when you are invited as a guest speaker.
Why did I want a list of books of the Bible arranged by the number of chapters in each book? It was put in my heart to memorize scriptures by associating them with different activities at different times of the day. I am making Bible Scripture Memory Clock Activity Packs to help other experiential learners like me memorize scripture while reinforcing analog clock skills.

If you happened across this post, I would love to hear how you discovered it and why you are interested in a list of books of the Bible with a certain number of chapters - please pop a note in the comments below.

Whatever your reason for needing a list of books of the Bible arranged by the number of chapters in each book, I hope this list will be helpful to you too.

Bible Books By Number of Chapters - Why and How Behind this Listicle

This morning at 10:10, when I searched "Bible 10:10",  I was seeking scriptures to add to my Scripture memory clock packages. Discovering just a few, the "Doubting Thomas" part of me emerged. I wondered, "Am I really getting served up all the 10:10 Bible verses, or am I just receiving the most popular 10:10 Bible verses?' So, I then went searching for "Bible books with ten chapters".  While I did find a post with the Books of the Bible listed in order with the number of chapters beside each one, I wanted something I could quickly use.  I needed a list of the number of chapters in each book of the Bible ordered by the number of chapters. So, now you know the why behind the creation of this listicle.

Bible Books By Number of Chapters - Three Caveats

There are a couple of important things people should know about the numbering of the books of the Bible.

First - Did you know that the original books of the Bible were not numbered? What? It's true! When the books of the Bible were first written, they were arranged just like the books and letters you might normally read. The Torah - the first five books of the Bible were divided into 154 sections in Israel to be read over three years in weekly worship. However, in  Babylonia, it was segmented into larger pieces, to be read over the course of a year.  The New Testament was divided into topical sections in the fourth century by chapters in the early 13th century by Eusebius of Caesarea. These numbering systems are no longer in wide use today.

Second - Did you also know that there can be variations in the numbering of the books of the Bible? This was a shock to me. Does it surprise you too? This was something I discovered when I led to a scripture in the book of Daniel. For me, this was extremely disturbing to discover because there is a great emphasis in the Torah not to add or subtract anything from the Holy Scriptures. The numbering system that exists today is hotly contested by many scholars, as it can cause confusion for readers. For example, Genesis 1 should not end until Genesis 2:4 according to many Hebrew scholars.

Third - Did you know that some Bibles have more books and chapters than others? Some Bibles, such as the Catholic Bible include a section of books called "The Apocrypha". These books are not included in most Protestant Bibles. The Bible used by the Church of The Latter-Day Saints had huge sections added to many books of the Bible by Joseph Smith. This current list is based on the numbering system I found on Thomas Creedy's blog post. God willing,  I will be able to update this post with further information soon. If you have information about the number of chapters in books of the Bible, that differs from this list, please pop a note in the comments below.
