Interesting Resources About Patrick Evangelist to Ireland

March 17 Irish Around the World Celebrate Patrick Who Brought Christ to Ireland

Scripture:
  • Romans 10:15 How shall they proclaim the Good News unless they are sent? For it is written," Beautiful are the feet that proclaim Good News,"
Making plans to celebrate March 17th? Looking for some ways to truly honour the life of this ancient anti-slavery advocate? What anti-slavery? Yes, perhaps you know part of his story, and some people might do a few crafts about snakes or shamrocks. However, many of our minds have seemingly been blocked about how this man spent part of his life as a slave, escaped through a God-led 200-mile walk, then returned to Ireland to lead people to Christ and even was almost excommunicated for not collecting tithes.

Each year thousands of people celebrate St. Patrick's Day in ways that in no way reflect the life of St. Patrick and what he stood for. Hopefully, this post may provide some useful resources to help shed a little more light on the life of St. Patrick and give you some ideas to mark this manmade Holy Day more appropriately.

Ways of Emphasizing Evangelism of Patrick in Ireland

Listen to The Collected Works of Saint Patrick

The following embedded audio is from the Internet Archives. It includes:
  • The Breastplate of Saint Patrick
  • Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus
  • The Confession of Saint Patrick
This would be an excellent resource for students in the upper years of high school to listen to before watching the movie St. Patrick- The Irish Legend.
Note: There is a rather surprising revelation in The Confession of Sant Patrick that I had not noticed when reading the book, so as with any media, you may wish to listen to this audio personally before deciding to share it with a class of students.

Wear Christian Green Clothing

Instead of the typical "I'm here for the green beer" or "Kiss me I'm Irish" T-shirt, why not opt for something Christian and clean in green? Faith Gear has a few T-Shirts and hoodies in Kelly Green or Emerald Green that you might choose from here on their website, such as this couples T-Shirt with an interpretation of a passage from the Song of Solomon pictured below."You are a seal upon my heart a seal upon my arm"

Listen to Christian Saint Patrick Day Songs

Seeking Christian Saint Patrick Day songs? There are a lot of songs floating around about leprechauns, beer, and pots of gold, but where oh where are the songs about Saint Patrick of old? I have started compiling a list of Christian Saint Patrick's Day Songs posted on YouTube. This playlist of Christian St. Parick's Day Songs includes a lovely selection of a musical English language version of The Breastplate of Saint Patrick.

Note: There are a few kids' Christian Saint Patrick Resources on YouTube that cannot be added to a playlist such as :

Watch a Free Full-Length Movie  - St Patrick - The Irish Legend

The movie, St Patrick - The Irish Legend, stars Patrick Bergen. Unfortunately no close - captioning is available for this upload. The movie starts off with an impressive miracle that I had never heard of before and it really piqued my interest.
Many people are familiar with the miracle of Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland but do not know how he came to be in Ireland in the first place.   This movie shows how he came to be enslaved in Ireland, his escape, his return to Ireland and the opposition he faced in his unorthodox methods and refusal to take tithes from the poor of Ireland. Once a slave himself, Patrick stood against slavery and human sacrifice that was being conducted under the Druidic rule in Ireland.
The movie is filled with swashbuckling action and fascinating special effects used to depict incredible miracles that reportedly happened to protect Patrick and his fellow Christian missionaries.
I really enjoyed this movie and it made me want o read the original writings of St. Patrick.
Due to some adult topics and violence, this movie is not suitable for children.

Watch a St. Patrick Free Cartoon

Catholic Heroes of the Faith: The Saint Patrick Story (2020) posted by Vision Video is an excellent gentler cartoon version of St. Patrick- The Irish Legend. The movie starts with a relatable fictitious incident where Patrick is grounded by his parents. The dangers involved in his slavery are presented, but not in any gory manner. This version would be suitable for children in Grades 4 and up.

The black and white illustrations in the paperback chapter book will help keep younger readers and ESL readers focussed and help them predict the meaning of words as they read.

The Confession of St. Patrick - Teens andAdults

There are several translations of The Confession of St. Patrick. Here is a link to a pdf of a translation of The Confession of Saint Patrick by Padraig McCarthy.  This could be a useful resource for a comparative media study to use alongside the movie St. Patrick- The Irish Legend. The reading level is a bit challenging, so it would be best for high school students.
