Messianic Passover Preparations 5784 -2024 for Children and Young at Heart

Ideas for Preparing for Messianic Passover

Passover 2024/5784 is coming soon.
Our Saviour celebrated Passover with His disciples the evening before His trial and execution.

In 2024, Christians will commemorate Good Friday, which marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, on Friday, March 29th. This day is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum, leading up to Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Good Friday is a significant day of reflection and worship in the Christian faith.

Orthodox Christians observe Pascha, also known as Orthodox Easter, which is often aligned with Passover timing due to historical reasons. In 2024, Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on Sunday, May 5th. This is the most significant feast in the Orthodox Christian liturgical calendar, commemorating the resurrection of the Messiah. The date of Pascha is determined based on the Julian calendar and usually occurs after the Jewish Passover. This difference in dates is because the Orthodox Church follows the original rulings from the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. for determining the date of Easter, which aligns with the Julian calendar and takes into account the paschal full moon after the Jewish Passover.

So when is the actual date that Our Creator asked us to celebrate Passover?

Passover in 2024 really begins before sundown on Monday, April 22, and ends after nightfall on Tuesday, April 30. It corresponds to the Hebrew calendar dates of Nissan 15-22¹. The Seder feast, which is held on the first two nights of Passover, will be on the nights of April 22 and 23¹.

Torah-observant followers of the Messiah celebrate Passover by blending traditional Jewish customs with the belief in the Messiah. Passover is celebrated by:
  • Retelling the Exodus When recounting the story of the Israelites' liberation from Egypt,  parallels between the Passover lamb and Jesus' sacrifice are emphasized.
  • Seder Meal includes discussions about how the elements of the meal point to the Messiah's death and resurrection.
  • Personal Reflection on one's own deliverance from spiritual bondage is encouraged -drawing comparing the Israelites' physical freedom and our spiritual freedom through the Messiah. Messianic Jews view Passover as a time to remember God's deliverance in the past and to celebrate the hope and redemption brought through the Messiah.
It’s important to note that some Christians observe a holiday known as “Christian Passover” at around the same time. However, the specific dates and practices can vary among different Christian denominations and communities. Therefore, it is best to check with local Christian congregations for the exact dates they celebrate this year.

Hopefully, these resources will be useful for helping prepare for Messianic Passover with children.
