Note: I originally began writing this post back in 2021. While my personal journey and vocabulary have shifted since then as a Messianic believer, the core message of listening to Our Father's's warnings remains timeless. I wanted to share this completed piece with you today just as it was originally laid on my heart.
Jesus Take the Wheel!
When people invite Christ to live in their hearts, they frequently start hearing the urgings of God more clearly. It is extremely important to pay attention to the urgings of the Holy Spirit, as Kevin Sorbo discovered to his sorrow. It is also reassuring to know that even when we make the mistake of disregarding warnings, God can take our mess and turn it into a message.
This post features Biblical examples of people who did not listen to God's warnings, an excellent teaching on how to hear God more clearly, plus an interview where actor Kevin Sorbo shares his story of healing after disregarding a warning, and the song in my heart today — Jesus Take the Wheel.

I was led when I got out of bed to an interview with an actor known by quite a few, but after seeing his interview, I then wanted to view a lot more of his movies. Perhaps you will too when you hear the story of this overcomer who gives God the glory.

Adapted from an interview done with reporter Michelle Wilson on CBN — How God Miraculously Healed Kevin Sorbo.
Perhaps you know of Kevin Sorbo from his multi-season lead role in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys or Gene Roddenberry's TV series, Andromeda, but perhaps like me, you have not heard how much and why he cherishes God's word.
Growing up in Minnesota, Kevin's parents made sure he and his siblings had a good grounding in Christian values. One pivotal part in his walk was answering the altar call at a Billy Graham crusade when he was 13. Kevin majored in business in college, but eventually dropped out and started his acting career in Minnesota. Later, he moved to Hollywood. Kevin was turned down for the lead in two TV series then finally landed his huge breakout role as Hercules. It was during the filming of season three that Kevin met his wife, fellow actor Sam Jenkins. Kevin was on top of the world. He was engaged to the woman of his dreams; Hercules had become the most-watched TV show on the planet; he was promoting his first motion picture, and being groomed to become the next action hero. What could go wrong?
Here's the piece of the interview where Kevin shares how he ignored a warning from God, yet God was able to turn his mess into a message.
In 1997, Kevin started experiencing a cold, tingling sensation and numbness in his left fingers. Doctors later discovered an aneurysm in his shoulder that was producing blood clots, but he kept pushing through his grueling 18-hour filming schedules.
During a visit to his chiropractor, Kevin explicitly asked him not to crack his neck. While lying on the table, Kevin recalls hearing a distinct voice in his head—not once, but twice—warning him: "Don't let him crack your neck."
Unfortunately, Kevin stayed quiet and disregarded the inner warning. The chiropractor cracked his neck anyway, releasing the blood clots directly to his brain. This triggered an aneurysm rupture and three separate strokes that left him facing years of grueling physical recovery.
Did you know that Kevin Sorbo had suffered three strokes? My favourite quote from Kevin in that interview is:
"Faith is not tangible, you can't touch it. It's something that's a belief, something that's inside of you. And I needed hope and faith to keep pushing myself past every single day of what I was going through and what I felt. My true strength comes from God and certainly from my family right after that. They're the most important things in my life."

Examples of God Warning People in the Bible
The Bible has numerous examples of people who received warnings from God. Often these warnings came to them in dreams — like the ones that protected the life of Christ when he was first born, but other times these warnings came in more unusual ways — like in Numbers 22 when Balaam's donkey could see what Balaam couldn't see.
Here is a list of scriptures where God warned people in the Bible:
- Genesis 19:15-26 — Angels warn Lot and his family to flee Sodom and strictly command them not to look back. Lot's wife disregards the warning, looks back, and is turned into a pillar of salt.
- Numbers 22:12-35 — God warns Balaam not to curse his anointed people. When Balaam goes anyway, his donkey protects him three times from losing his life. Finally, God opens the donkey's mouth to speak, and opens Balaam's eyes to see an angel with a drawn sword standing in the centre of the path.
- Matthew 2:12-13 — God uses dreams to warn the Wise Men not to return to King Herod, and later warns Joseph to flee to Egypt, protecting the life of the newborn Jesus.
To deep-dive into these accounts with full context, I highly recommend using The Tree of Life Bible (TLV) for your daily scripture study.
Practical Ways to Hear the Holy Spirit Clearly
God rarely shouts over a busy schedule. If you want to recognize His warnings before making a mistake, try focusing on these areas:
- Cultivate Silence: Set aside quiet moments daily without phones, media, or distractions to let your thoughts settle.
- Filter Through Scripture: The Holy Spirit will never urge you to do something that contradicts the Bible.
- Pay Attention to "Checks": If you feel a sudden, unexplainable lack of peace or an internal "stop" signal, pause and pray before moving forward.
Writing down these internal nudges can help you track God's guidance.Using a dedicated Zippered Prayer Journal- like the Strong and Courageous leatherette journal to record prayers and checks during quiet time is useful for some people. It's handy to be able to tuck little extras inside so they don't fall out.
When We Let Go of the Wheel
Disregarding God’s promptings often forces us into situations where we completely lose control. Like Kevin Sorbo on his long road to recovery, or the driver in Carrie Underwood's iconic song, "Jesus, Take the Wheel," we sometimes have to hit rock bottom to realize we were never meant to drive alone.
If you are facing a mess today because you missed a warning, take heart. Step away from the driver's seat, raise your hands, and let Christ take full control of your path. He is the ultimate master at steering our broken moments back into a beautiful story of redemption.
You can listen to the powerful message of Jesus Take the Wheel on Carrie Underwood's debut album, available here as CD or LP: Some Hearts CD by Carrie Underwood.
Oh, and before you go, you might want to listen to that interview with Kevin Sorbo from a few years ago.
