Modern Cannabis - Deadly Deceiver

Recently, while praying about the heartbreaking reality of young people dying by suicide, a prompting came into my heart to 'Look in the book.' When I opened my Bible, my eyes fell on a startling phrase

There is death in the pot!'

Surprised and curious, I did a bit of online sleuthing and found out that the use of modern cannabanoid substances is being linked to more and more suicides!

2 Kings 4:40 Ancient Tragedy Points to Solution for Modern Problem

In the story, a group of men gather for a communal meal. They shred an unrecognized wild vine into the cooking pot and sit down to eat. They are not trying to harm themselves, and no one is trying to poison them. They are intentionally consuming a meal they fully believe is safe, nourishing, and good. It is only after they begin to eat that they realise a hidden, toxic element is present, causing them to cry out in terror: “Man of God, there is death in the pot!”

An evocative digital illustration created with AI. It depicts an ancient, dark metal cooking pot boiling over an open fire, representing the scriptural scene from 2 Kings 4:40. Coiled subtly around the base and handles of the pot is a serpent, evoking the snake from the Garden of Eden. Wisps of green vapor rise alongside the steam from the pot, blending the themes of biblical temptation, deceptive safety, and hidden poison.

This ancient text offers a profound, sobering metaphor for a modern-day crisis: the intentional consumption of high-potency cannabis products by individuals who fully believe they are doing something completely harmless.

The Illusion of Safety

Like the men preparing the stew, today's consumers look at cannabis edibles, vapes, and concentrates and see something ordinary and benign. Because cannabis is legal across Canada, widely marketed, and sold in professional, attractive packaging, people approach it with total confidence.

They intentionally consume these products expecting a harmless way to relax, relieve stress, or fit in with friends. They trust the product. They remember the low-potency, natural cannabis of decades past and assume today's options are just a modern version of the same thing. But they do not realise that the substance inside has been fundamentally engineered into something completely different.

The Delayed Trap of Intentional Use

The tragedy in the scripture happens because the men intentionally swallow the food, unaware of its toxicity until it is already inside their bodies. This perfectly mirrors the specific danger of cannabis edibles:

  • The Delayed Fuse: Unlike smoking, which gives an immediate warning to the user, an edible must pass through the stomach and liver. It can take one to two hours to feel any effect.
  • The Trap of Thinking "It's Not Working": Because they feel nothing initially, people assume the dose was too small or completely safe. With full intention, they eat more.
  • The Overwhelming Flood: By the time the body finally processes the THC, the consumer is suddenly hit with a massive, concentrated, and overwhelming wave of the drug that they cannot stop or reverse.

Crying Out: The Mental Health Crisis and Tragic Realities

When the men in the biblical story realised what they had consumed, they cried out because they recognized an immediate threat to their well-being. Today, emergency rooms and mental health professionals are hearing the same cries from individuals who intentionally took cannabis products, expecting a good time, but ended up in a living nightmare.

Public health records and toxicology reports have documented horrifying instances where individuals intentionally ingested cannabis and subsequently suffered severe, fatal psychological breaks. Tragically, there are documented reports of individuals with no prior history of self-harm dying by suicide or experiencing fatal falls after consuming excessive doses of these products.

Because modern commercial cannabis makes it incredibly easy to intentionally consume massive, toxic amounts of THC, users are experiencing severe psychiatric distress:

  • Acute, Induced Psychosis: A person can go from seeking relaxation to experiencing terrifying hallucinations, severe paranoia, and a total detachment from reality. This state of altered reality frequently drives impulsive, dangerous behaviour the user would never exhibit while sober.
  • Elevated Risk of Suicide: According to peer-reviewed data compiled by health organizations, there is a definitive link between high-potency cannabis consumption and suicidality. Youth who heavily consume cannabis show a nearly four-fold increase in suicide attempts. Data evaluating intentional, suspected suicide exposures to cannabis found that approximately 1 in 10 cases resulted in severe life-threatening outcomes or death.
  • Severe Physical Distress: The body reacts to the toxicity with severe panic attacks, rapid heart rates, and uncontrollable, cyclical vomiting (Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome).

A Warning Beyond Edibles: Speaking Truth to the Community

In 2 Kings, the situation changed because the men didn't stay silent out of politeness or comfort. They openly acknowledged that something toxic had entered their system, exposing the danger so a remedy could be found.

We must stop assuming that because a substance is commercialized, mainstream, or legal, it is safe for our minds and souls. Many people are walking into this danger with clean intentions, completely unaware of the profound psychiatric risks of highly engineered THC.

Crucially, we must recognize that this hidden danger is not limited to edibles. While infused treats present a unique trap due to their ordinary appearance and delayed effects, the underlying threat is the unprecedented concentration of THC itself. This same high-potency chemical is driving mental health crises across all modern consumption methods, including vapes, concentrated waxes, shatter, and high-THC plant strains.

By sharing this truth, speaking openly about the reality of modern potencies across all products, and looking out for our neighbours, we can help pull the hidden poison from the pot. Let us keep our eyes open, our prayers fervent, and our families safe.
