At first, I thought - why only five dollars, shouldn't such a man be worthy of a higher honour? Then it occurred to me that having his face on a more commonly used bill would ensure he is seen by more people.

Several Members of Parliament in Manitoba have drafted a petition letter to Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada, urging them to replace former Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier, whose face now adorns the five-dollar bill with Sergeant Prince.

Who Was Sergeant Tommy Prince?

Sergeant Tommy Prince was the great-great-grandson of Chief Peguis. He volunteered for the Second World War and trained as a sapper — a soldier who builds roads and bridges and lays and clears landmines — by the Royal Canadian Engineer. Later he volunteered to be part of the 1st Canadian Special Service Battalion, known as the Devil’s Brigade. One of Prince’s better-known acts of bravery happened when his communication line was cut while behind enemy lines. He dressed as a farmer, went out, repaired and the line while pretending to tie his shoes. He even shook his fist at both German and Allied lines before going back to his post!
Sergeant Prince received numerous medals for his amazing acts of bravery in the war.
