Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement Resources

Yom Kippur Yearly Repentance to Start a Fresh Year

Yom Kippur -the Day of Atonement is a very important Feast of God for all people who love God and especially for those wanting to honour the sacrifice His Son made at Calvary to atone for our sins. Until a few years ago, I knew very little about the importance of this day or any of the Holidays of God. Perhaps, Yom Kippur is relatively new to you too. If so, you might be interested in some of these resources I've discovered in my exploration of the significance of this holiest of Sabbaths. Unfortunately, many people have not had the opportunity to learn about the importance of this day.  This post has a video teaching about Yom Kippur from Dr. Sam Nadler a messianic Jew and a few links to events and useful resources for further exploration and study.

Yom Kippur - Origins

Leviticus gives a clear message from God about  Yom Kippur - that it is to be an extremely holy day in which no work is to be done and people are to think deeply about their sins repent and ask forgiveness for the sins they have done in the previous year. This is to be done each year forever. Dr. Sam Nadler explains the significance of the Day of Atonement for all people who love THE LORD in the following video. What I found interesting in this video is the evidence in the New Testament that he gives of the first century Christians continuing to observe this most Holy of Days.

Yom Kippur Quick Facts

  • Who observes Yom Kippur? Many people who seek to love the Lord their God with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. While most people think that Yom Kippur is only for Jews,, many Christians also observe Yom Kippur.
  • What is  Yom Kippur? Yom Kippur is a solemn day where people seek cleansing of their misdeeds through fasting and prayer. No work is to be done.

  • Why would followers of Christ want to participate in Yom Kippur? Many Christians participate in Yom Kippur out of respect for the great sacrifice that God made by having His Son die as the penultimate sacrifice for our misdeeds.
  • How do people participate in Yom Kippur Services? There are ten Days of Awe leading up to the day of atonement in which to do some deep soul searching about .how we have fallen short of the Glory of God. In this children's National Geographic book -Celebrate Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, I learned many interesting things about the way Yom Kippur is traditionally observed by Jews around the world. For instance, I learned that many people will write a list of their sins on a piece of paper and then throw the paper into the water to be washed away  An important part of Yom Kippur is fasting - not just from food, but also from work and pleasurable pursuits. The book contains an English adaptation of the beautiful prayer communally said each year on Yom Kippur at synagogues. Another important part of Yom Kippur is hearing the Shofar sound,
  • Where can people participate in Yom Kippur? There are Yom Kippur services in many areas. If you cannot find a service near you, perhaps you would like to take part in this online Day of Atonement Service:

    Yom Kippur 2022 Service
Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. It comes at the end of the 10 Days of Awe where believers are encouraged to reflect deeply on their lives, relationships, priorities and devotion to God.
In Jewish communities, it is generally believed that sins not repented of, or relational discords un-reconciled, before the end of Yom Kippur will be brought as negative baggage into the next year. Therefore, this is regarded as a holy time to ensure we are right with God and one another.
This year Yom Kippur ends at sundown Israel time on Wed. Oct. 5th.
As believers in Christ, we understand that we are called to live daily lives of repentance and consecration, and yet, being intentional to set aside moments for reflection and humble prayer are so important. It is with this intent that several ministry and prayer leaders from across Canada felt to give opportunity for us to gather together--as believers from across Canada--to humble ourselves together in prayer on Yom Kippur. We hope you can join for this special time of worship, prayer, sharing and communion together. Please invite anyone who you feel may value this opportunity.
