Which Shabbat Readings Call to Your Soul This Week?
Here I am, on Shabbat morning, mourning that I have not yet prepared for today's Shabbat readings, and it has me wondering if perhaps this is the way it should be - should I be starting my Shabbat readings today and continue to delve into the readings through the week?
The Shabbat readings posted by Messianic Rabbi David Stone are titled "Go Forth Yourself" and include:
- Torah- Genesis 12:1-17:27
- Haftarah- Isaiah 40:27-41:16
- New Covenant- Romans 1-25 and Romans 3
For some reason, Romans 1:1-25 seems to be catching my eye, so I am going to start there.

Thoughts on Romans 1:1-25
In Chapter One of Romans, we find Paul explaining to the church in Rome why people do so many evil things. This is highly relevant for us today when images and news stories of horrific things come to us over the airways. It seems that wherever you turn there is yet another horrific story of murder and mayhem. How did it get to be this way? Paul points out one reason people commit atrocities- They started worshipping the things that Our Father created- rather than worshipping The Creator!
Scripture:
Romans 1:25
What kind of evil things do people do when given over to the lusts of their hearts if they worship the created instead of the Creator?
Paul lists a great number of behaviours that can be exhibited by people given over to the lusts of their heart including milder symptoms such as:
- Gossiping
- Boasting
- Disobeying parents
- Coveting
- Envy
- Same-sex attraction - a form of narcissism
To more severe symptoms such as:
- Being Ruthless
- Slandering
- Causing Strife
- Being Hostile
- Murder
Not only do people involved in idol worship do these behaviours, but Paul says they condone other people doing these things.
Scripture:
Romans 1:32
So now that we know the root cause behind these behaviours- worshipping something or someone other than the Creator, what can we do about it?
- Pray! Pray only to Our Creator! Do not pray to anything created by Our Creator! Ask Our Father to protect our minds from falling into a trap like this, so we will not be given over into the depravity of our hearts. Pray as Our Savior did and ask Our Father to "deliver us from evil and lead us not into temptation". Pray for people whose souls are afflicted in this way. Ask Our Father as Our Savior did to "Forgive them for they know not what they do." Pray for their stony hearts to turn back to Our Creator and open their eyes to the truth of Our Creator.
- Praise the Creator! Ensure that you are praising the Creator instead of the created. Put Our Creator first in your life.
- Beware of those who are exhibiting any of the above symptoms.
