José Berríos Insurance Rejection: A Call to Prayer and Hope in the Unexpected

A prayer for Blue Jays' José Berríos after his insurance rejection. Finding hope in God’s plan when life is turned upside down. Join our prayer.

Welcome to Turtle Dove Thoughts. Today, my heart is heavy as I reflect on a story that reminds us how quickly the ground can shift beneath our feet.

Have you ever had your whole world turned upside down? Have you ever stood on the precipice of your biggest dream, only to have the door slammed shut? Do you know the feeling of a "sure thing" vanishing into thin air?

Recently, the sports world was rocked by the news of a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher whose plans were suddenly derailed. This young man—José Berríos—was preparing for a major moment in his career, but during a routine process, he was rejected by an insurance company. The reason for this setback was rooted in medical concerns from his previous season; Berríos ended the 2025 campaign on the injured list with elbow inflammation. Because of this history, he was denied insurance approval to participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. In an instant, his dream of representing Puerto Rico was met with a frustrating "no," leaving a significant part of his plans in a state of sudden uncertainty.

Turning Trials into Triumphs

It is easy to see such an incident as a tragedy, but we serve a God who specializes in the "impossible turn-around." We see this throughout the Bible. Think of Joseph, sold into slavery by his own brothers and forgotten in a dungeon; yet God used those "horrible" years to place him in a position to save nations from famine. Think of Lazarus, whose story seemed to have reached a final, silent end in a tomb, only for Jesus to turn that grief into one of the greatest displays of His glory ever witnessed.

What the world sees as a "rejection," our Heavenly Father can use as a "redirection." We may not understand the why right now, but we can trust the Who.

I invite you to join me in lifting this young man up in prayer:

"Father, Great Creator of the universe—You see all and you know all. You know why this young man's plans for life have been put on hold. You know how this must be a terrible shock for this young man, his friends, his fans, and his family. We come to You in the name of Your Holy Son — Yeshua HaMashiach and we ask that if it is possible for this interruption in his life's plans to be undone — do it in such an amazing way — that all will see that it was undone by You. However, if You have even better plans for this young man's life, bring those through in such a way people will know he is being guided by You. Thank you for all the mighty works You have already done. We also ask that You place a hedge of protection around this young man, his friends, his fans, and his family as they come to You in prayer. Amen."

Let’s keep our eyes on Him, believing that even in the middle of a "no" from an insurance company, God’s "yes" is still at work. Remember the promise in Lamentations 3:25-26: "The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord." Even when things feel out of our control, His timing is perfect.
