Our Father Knows the Need: Turning Chickpeas into Chicken (Based on Matthew 6:8)

Turning Chickpeas into Chicken - A Mini- Kitchen Miracle!

The Story Behind The Recipe

Mattityahu (Mat) 6:7-8 CJB [7] “And when you pray, don’t babble on and on like the pagans, who think God will hear them better if they talk a lot. [8] Don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask him. https://bible.com/bible/1275/mat.6.7-8.CJB

Sometimes, a simple survey can lead to a spiritual spark. After answering a few questions about restaurants, I found myself craving the savoury crunch of KFC nuggets - something I haven't eaten in several years. Later that evening, I followed the urging of the spirit within me to start boiling some water in a little shallow cast iron pan in my toaster oven and take the channa flour out of my cupboard. When I was finished with this recipe - it was a delightful reminder of how much my Heavenly Father loves me. Here is my Holy Spirit inspired recipe for Fake KFC Nuggets for One - perfect for The Feast of Unleavened Bread.

My savoury "Fake KFC Nuggets" browning in the cast iron pan—the "tiny spoon" method creates those perfect craggy, crispy edges!

Curious about the recipe and wondering why it turned out so delicious, I asked AI on Google Search about the recipe - was it original? Apparently- yes! I also wondered how these simple ingredients could possibly turn out to taste like chicken nuggets - afterall chana flour tastes a bit like starchy fresh peas! Here is the recipe and what I found out about why it turned out so delicious!

The Secret: Why the Cast Iron Method Works

These "Fake KFC Nuggets." aren’t just a substitute; they are a revelation! Made with channa (chickpea) flour and prepared entirely in a single cast iron pan, they have that perfect craggy texture and savoury "chicken" taste without any meat or leavening.

Making this recipe in a shallow kitchen pan isn't just about convenience; the method is what creates the flavour. By boiling the water directly in the cast iron pan before adding the flour, the pan is already intensely hot. This creates an immediate "sear" on the bottom of the mixture, developing a deep, nutty, and meaty flavour that you simply can't get in a regular pot. Furthermore, the cast iron adds a subtle savoury note that mimics the richness of real chicken nuggets. Some cooks also believe cooking in cast iron imbues a bit of iron into the recipe!

The Recipe (Serves 1)

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. The Cast Iron Start: Add a little water to your small cast iron pan and bring it to a boil.
  2. The Mix: Stir in the 1/3 cup (80 ml) of channa flour until it forms a smooth, thick paste right in the hot pan.
  3. The First Bake: Smooth the mixture over the bottom of the pan. Bake uncovered in your toaster oven.
  4. The "Skin" Stir: Watch for a skin to form on top. Stir the caramelised skin into the mixture—this creates the flaky chicken texture.
  5. Bake Longer: Bake 30 minutes more on medium heat - till it resembles the texture of a thick pudding.
  6. Anoint with Olive Oil: Drizzle with extra light-tasting Gallo olive oil and bake until firm.
  7. Season: Grate plenty of fresh black pepper on top and mix well.
  8. Crisp It Up: Drizzle with Gallo olive oil and bake until firm.
  9. The Final Touch: Let it sit for about an hour, then use a tiny spoon to pry up irregular clumps. Those jagged edges from the spoon create those irregular, "breaded" textures that catch the oil.
  10. Crisp It Up: Drizzle with Gallo olive oil and bake your nuggets one last time - slightly warming them in the olive oil. Cool before enjoying with your favourite dipping sauce.
