About Walk for Freedom

Walk for Freedom is an annual international walk that takes place on October 14 to raise awareness of human trafficking. People walk single file holding posters with human trafficking facts written on them. Here are a few facts about human trafficking that might surprise you.

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is slavery. People are forced to work in a variety of jobs for long hours in horrible working conditions for little or no pay. They are frequently physically abused, starved and threatened into submission. Anyone can be sold by human traffickers. If they can create a hold over someone, they will sell you.

Many people equate human trafficking with sex workers, but that is just the tip of the iceberg of what these cold-hearted people do.

There are many people sold to work in the following industries:
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Farming
  • Nail Salons
  • Clothing Factories
  • Firework Factories
  • Building Trades
  • Sex Trades

How Do Human Traffickers Get Slaves to Comply?

People often think that people who are enslaved by human traffickers are chained night and day. True, while some traffickers still do use physical chains, far more often traffickers use a combination of physical and psychological abuse.
Human traffickers get their prey to comply in a variety of ways including:
  • Hypnotism
  • Brainwashing
  • Threatening to kill or torture friends, family or pets
  • Physical beatings
  • Staged beatings of another person
  • Holding their family members hostage
  • Threatening to kill them
  • Drugging them
  • Having people in authority back them - doctors, police, clergy, politicians
  • Isolating them in rural areas
  • Allowing their prey to get away and then taking them hostage again
  • Gaslighting
Because of the psychological holds human traffickers place on their prey, you may see trafficked people in the crowds around you every day and not even realize it.

That little old lady sitting beside you on that church pew? Yes- even that little old lady could be used by traffickers too.

What Can People Do to Help People Who Are Being Trafficked?

  1. Pray. Pray for Our Creator to open the eyes of the people who are perpetuating such evil against them. Pray for helping hands and protection for the people who are being trafficked as well as people working in rescue operations all around the world. Pray for Our Creator to guide you in what He wants you to do.
  2. Learn more. Read books written by survivors of human trafficking and agencies helping people who have been trafficked. Every situation is not the same. The more you know the more effective your prayers and actions can be.
  3. Watch. Keep your eyes open for signs of grooming and abuse in your community. Does someone have a new friend who is much older or younger than them? Are they making plans to go away? Take note of what you see. Are they less friendly to neighbours? Are they giving their treasured pets away? Make notes to give to an organization that works in Human Trafficking. Do NOT notify the police! It is far better to notify your church. Often if police are called, the person being trafficked can end up being more severely abused after the police leave. It is far better if an innocent group of church ladies bring cookies invite the abused person for tea or offer them a ride to get groceries.
  4. Donate time, skills or money to organizations working to end human trafficking.

This is a great article! I wasn't aware of this day being a day set aside for this. I'm grateful to know this now and how I and everyone can help those who are captive. Even if we can just pray 🙏! God 🕊bless ❣
