Thoughts and Resources for Studying These Shabbat Readings

Exodus VaEira Overview

The title of this section of Torah reading has me excited already! VaEira/V'Eira - I Adonai Appeared! Wow!
This section of scripture covers part of the 10 plagues that afflicted Egypt and leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger wondering what will happen next and ends, just after the hail storm with lightning that destroys the Egyptian's crops in the field.
Here is a cute puppet show from Chabad.org that approaches the plagues as a weather forecast.

How many plagues can you name without peeking?

Haftarah (Prophetic Reading) Yechezkel (Ezekiel) 28:25- 29:21 Overview

This section from the scriptures of the prophet Yechezkel contains three prophecies:
  1. Adonai will gather the people of Yisrael who have been scattered back to the land they were promised and they will enjoy peace while Adonai makes judgements on all their neighbours. Many translations use the wording "inflict punishment" on their neighbours, but Strong's concordance interprets the Hebrew "asa" as "to execute" and the Hebrew "sepet" (shefet) as "punishments"  but Strongs says this word means "judgements".YZ 28:26
  2. A judgement on Pharoah
  3. Rewarding Nebuchadnezzar

To be continued....
